About Mervin

Owner, Firearm Training Provider and Firearm Assessor of Back to Basics Firearm Training Academy. His passion for firearms started in 1978 when he joined the S.A.Navy and later in 1979 the S.A.Police force. Whilst still a member of the Police, he joined a private shooting club where his knowledge about safe gun handling skills broadened. Here he was also introduced to how to manage a shooting range with the emphasis on safety and also took part in several club shooting competitions. He was involved with several shootouts with gangsters on the Cape Flats. He experienced what it’s like to be shot at, being shot and also to shoot back.
He attended an Instructors course in 2004 and became Competent and Accredited to provide training in Handgun, Shotgun, Self-loading Rifles and Manually-operated Rifles. He built a good reputation and understanding with his students, gun owners and “rusty” gun owners. He also has a very good relationship with other training academies, sport shooters, Police and Metro Police, Correctional service (Pollsmoor) and also the Emergency Response Team (ERT) of the Grand West Casino, whom he trained for 10 years. (Competency courses)
He is also very good with those who never handled a firearm before especially females and children. His passion for firearms, firearm training and how he shares his firearms knowledge makes him your first option in firearm training.
